I have an old friend who is a recovering alcoholic who sees in WoO a metaphor for addiction and recovery--I&#039;m not sure whether that&#039;s a widely held view of the book/movie or not.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;But the message I get from it is similar to the one you&#039;ve identified: Whatever needs doing, you probably already have the strength inside you to do it; the only way you can find out for sure is to try.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;I don&#039;t see it as pollyanna &quot;You can do anything you try.&quot; Rather, I see it as pragmatic, &quot;Believe you can do something until proven otherwise; and make sure you get cast-iron proof.&quot;&lt;/p&gt;
