I read this blog today (Oct 08)http://tinyurl.com/3rdc77 and came back to your thought about striking while the iron is cold. It seems to be that the iron is colder now, but that only brings more opportunities for those with vision and passion.

I read your article and interview with much interest. We are a 63 year old company that took the plunge and bought the Sotheby's International Realty franchise for the Bahamas in 2006 and we have never looked back. We are thankfull that we have the Sotheby's brand and that it did not end up in one of our compititors hands The brand has made a positive impact on our agents and admin team. We were able to immediately seperate ourselves
from our competitors and attract clients who relate to the brand. It amazes me that more independent companies
have not taken advantage of the opportunity to become a part of the Sotheby's international Realty brand and network.

Redfin - great sign. Yes. Simple call to action. "Buy Me." I love that.

What do I like about the Sotheby's sign. Well let's start with what is written on - Sotheby's International Realty.

Juxtapose that against let's say a Both Smith Real Estate sign. What is Bob Smith? What does he mean to me? What differentiates him from all the other Bob Smiths in the marketplace.

The Sotheby's International Real Estate sign exudes a 250+ year brand experience in appraising, representing, fine goods. The "International" component takes that notion that real estate is "local" (which by the way means nothing) put a context to how the home is going to be positioned, marketed and handled.

Set in white against a deep blue background, the Sotheby's International Real Estate logo isn't battling bright reds, yellows, evergreens and balloons for placement. It's clean, polished, simple and elegant - a motif consistent with their brand message.

The bottom line is that as a simple yard sign, as brand touch point, it perfectly executes the meaning behind the company that is consistent with everything else they do.

Marc,

I don't know if my first comment conveyed what I was asking you. I'm not referring to the homes that Sotheby's represents but rather the appearance of their physical sign. The signs I've seen up here are just kind of meh in style so I was wondering if their signs down there are any different. So far I think Redfin has the nicest real estate yard signs of all.

It's inevitable Sherry. The branding story you are building here is powerful. I look forward to sitting down with you one on one and revealing the story in a meaningful way.

Marc,
That was just an outstanding post. As you know Sotheby's is one of our sister brands, and has set an execptionally high standard within the Realogy brands. They are a great role model for us as we get ready to launch BH&G.I can only hope you will be able to write a similar post about us at some point in the future...

And one last thing, the next time you are in Dallas and happen to encounter a wallet thief again, give me a call. I'll hang with you.

I wouldn't as far as saying the only one in the country. There are others. This could be an invitation for them to speak up.

They stood out by virtue of color and simplicity and by virtue of the specific homes they corresponded with. I am not naive and realize that there are probably less than stunning homes with a Sotheby's sign in front. That day, I did not see any. What I saw, matched precisely to their brand message.

Thanks Joshua

Marc,

One of the best posts yet! I was asking myself when I would chime in on your blog and this post hit home with me with like a hot poker in the eye.

When the iron is cold it may be more difficult to shape a company, but when you do it is so much smoother!!!

It is amazing to read what 2 smart guys with a parallel vision and leadership can discuss in a single conversation. You covered it all. And covered it very well.

I can't wait to witness it myself. And create one.
