Let's indeed not forget that at all. They are indeed part of the group of people who have no right to accuse the media of anything other than sounding a much needed alarm.

Honestly, I think given the need for real estate to revamp its entire message to the world, courting the media rather than bashing it might not be such a bad idea.

Let's not forget that mortgage brokers and mortgage bankers are supposed to be trusted advisors also.

What might be interesting is if a REALTOR was also a Certified Financial Planner and a mortgage broker. Then, you could put that person on the hook a little more thoroughly for problems down the road after the transaction.

Hey Christian. Dave here - the guy with the freshly in-the-can We Rock Chicago video... Nice to bump into you here.

WellcomeMat.com rocks!

Is it not possible that what is perceived as "bad or unfair" media coverage could actually, in hindsight, be thought of as fair and insightful warnings by the press to the consumer?

If I remember correctly, up until the press started to dig in, people were buying homes they simply could not afford. Agents were advising clients to offer bids much higher than the selling price and exposing them to harmful mortgage programs because "money is cheap".

Is it possible that many inside our industry chose not to advise their clients of the dangers of interest only mortgages or short term ARM's because they just weren't the expert they advertised themselves as or weren't the "ethical trusted advisor" people associate with a Realtor.

Imagine if the press didn't start reporting on the bubble and if real estate was left to continue to inflate at the crazy rate it was at? What impending doom would be facing our nation now?

I think there's another side to this story and one that could benefit our industry if our associations could get past how many paying members it has in any given month and think about how many poorly educated, greedy, non-consumer conscious members are employed here who possess no market knowledge, no awareness of fiscal responsibility, no awareness of real estate history who preying on the public under the guise of ethics and trusted advisor.

Let us not forget that the media also leveraged the overwhelming greed that rests within all of us, and had a lot to do with over-heating the markets. I, for one, will admit that there was a little devil inside telling me to go out and speculate on some pre-construction. "Sensational" the market was. "Sensational" it is now as well.

My plan?

Ignore about 90% of the commercial communication messages that hit me every day and focus on the ones that matter - those of my clients and potential clients.

Say less. Do more. Listen more. Connect with customers and clients more.

It's sort of a Jerry Maquire thing.
